Rockstar Warns GTA V Players Not to Park Vehicles in Garage Until Next Patch

If you’ve been playing Grand Theft Auto V, there’s a good chance you’ve had one of your preferred cars disappear from your garage, leaving you with having to find a new car to steal from an unlucky Los Santos citizen. Thankfully, Rockstar is aware of the issue and is now working on a fix.

Rockstar has posted information on its support page acknowledging the issue. It posted the following:

We have received some reports about problems with cars and garages, particularly after upgrading and then completing a mission, and are looking into this now. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a workaround to recover a car if it is missing. If you would like to receive an automatic email notification as soon as there is more information, please log into the Support Site and click Subscribe at the top of this page.

After some homework, Rockstar has pinpointed the cause of the issue, as stated below:

This issue may occur if you drive another character’s personal vehicle. We are looking into a fix to prevent this from occurring in the future. If you would like to receive an automatic email notification when the fix is live, please log into the Support Site and click Subscribe at the top of this page. In the meantime, please try to avoid parking a car in a garage, driving one already in a garage, or getting in a default vehicle, when playing as a character other than the one with your upgrades.

As you can imagine, it’s not a good idea to upgrade any vehicles except for the defaults for Michael (Audi A6 look-alike), Franklin (Dodge Charger look-alike), and Trevor (truck). Some players have shared that they’ve put upward of $100,000 into a car only to have it vanish.

I’ve circumvented the issue by only giving performance upgrades to each of the default vehicles. These vehicles don’t appear to be affected by the problem, and with some proper tuning are just as good as some of the faster sports cars in the game. It isn’t optimal since I really couldn’t care less about Franklin and Trevor’s vehicles, but at least I have some decent wheels I can rely on.

We’ll have more information on the upcoming patch once it’s released by Rockstar.
