HBO Orders Damon Lindelof’s ‘The Leftovers’

After a year in development, “The Leftovers” is going forward at HBO.

Earlier today, word broke that HBO has picked up “The Leftovers” for a ten episode first season. Based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, “The Leftovers” takes place in a world in which the Rapture has occurred and not everyone made the cut.

Former “Lost” executive producer Damon Lindelof is making his return to television with “The Leftovers” as the showrunner of the series and as an executive producer alongside Perrota. Lindelof and Perrotta co-wrote the pilot, with Peter Berg slated to direct the first episode and executive produce as well.

In “The Leftovers,” Justin Theroux portrays the lead character, Kevin Garvey; a father and a police chief who tries to maintain a sense of normalcy in his town. Liv Tyler co-stars as Meg; a woman who finds herself drawn into a cult; with Christopher Eccleston as a lapsed reverend turned journalist, Matt Jamison; Ann Dowd as cult leader Patti Levin, Amanda Warren as Mayor Lucy Warburton and Carrie Coon as a woman who lost both her husband and her child to the Rapture.

Other members of “The Leftovers” cast include Amy Brenneman, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Emily Meade, Michael Gaston, Max Carver, Charlie Carver, Annie Q, Paterson Joseph and Brad Leland.

A premiere date for “The Leftovers” has not been announced.
