Sony Combats Potential PS4 Shortage with Overproduction

PS4 demand is through the roof, and Sony doesn’t want to repeat the many nightmares of the past with shortages that cause consumers to look elsewhere.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton shared that they are producing an arsenal of PS4s to meet launch and post-launch demand. He said:

We want to make sure people can buy a PS4 on November 15 and through the holidays. So, we’re holding back some inventory to make sure people will be able to buy one.

We can pre-sell every unit we can manufacture, and the good news is that production yields have been phenomenal. We’re going to work very hard to make sure that every consumer that wants one gets one.

Typically, console manufacturers dump all of their supply onto store shelves for week one, and in most cases that’s not enough. They are then left trying to play catch-up for the following months as some consumers look to places like eBay where prices far exceed their MSRP value and in some cases consider alternatives.

Thankfully, Sony is one step head to begin the generation with millions of consoles manufactured months before launch. It’s confident it can supply the amount needed to satisfy pre-orders and launch day demand, and then ship enough units for the Black Friday and holiday rush that comes soon after. The measure of success will be how scalpers are affected, though. If they can get double their investment then what Sony has done still isn’t enough.
