Exclusive Preview: Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz

This week, Titan Books has released Star Trek: The Art of Juan Ortiz, a new collection of art by Ortiz that reimagines every episode of the original “Star Trek” series (plus the unaired pilot) as if they were all event movies. Thus, everything from “The Cage” to “Turnabout Intruder” and even “Spock’s Brain” are featured in 80 separate posters that were influence by films from the ‘60s, pulp novel covers, comic books and ads from that time period.

Ortiz is a veteran artist who has previously worked for Disney, Warner Bros., DC Comics and dozens of other clients over the course of two decades. To celebrate the release of his new Star Trek book, Titan Books has provided us with six of Ortiz’s Star Trek posters along with commentary from Ortiz himself!

A Piece of the Action

“When I first viewed this episode, I imagined the aliens as shape-shifters, so I went with that idea.”

Patterns of Force

“For me, it was all about the contradiction of Spock in a Nazi uniform. I notice that the poster for the movie Flight looks similar, coincidentally.”

The Paradise Syndrome

“I wanted Miramanee’s face to mimic the obelisk’s design. I tried to pick fonts that would do the same.”

We’ve got three more Star Trek posters by Ortiz on the next page!
