Rambo TV Series in Development; Stallone May Star

Back in 1982, Sylvester Stallone first stepped into the role of John Rambo for First Blood, an adaptation of David Morrell’s novel about a troubled Vietnam veteran who was highly skilled in guerrilla warfare. First Blood turned out to be so popular that Stallone reprised his role in three sequels, most recently in 2008’s Rambo.

Variety is reporting that Stallone is in negotiations to be involved creatively or possibly star in a new “Rambo” TV series that is in development by Entertainment One and Nu Image. The potential “Rambo” series will be shopped around internationally and the United States; which may help the project become a reality.

In a statement, Rambo producer Avi Lerner said “I’m happy to be partnering with a prolific company like Entertainment One who has a track record of creating high quality programming for their broadcast partners around the world. And I’m excited by the prospect of collaborating again with my good friend Sly for an encore in this next phase of the Rambo legacy.”

Getting Stallone back for a “Rambo” TV series would be a major coup, but it’s far from a sure thing. The Expendables franchise has helped revive Stallone’s feature film career and a television commitment could get in the way of that.

However, Stallone has often stated his fondness for the John Rambo character and he has attempted to get Rambo 5 off the ground in the past. If a “Rambo” series came to HBO, Cinemax, Showtime or STARZ with Stallone attached, it would be a major TV event. That’s something that could potentially convince Stallone to come to television.
