Well this isn’t the kind of football news I was expecting to be reporting upon today.
It’s been announced that One Direction member Louis Tomlinson has signed for Doncaster Rovers and… err… nope. I’ve got nothing.
I’m not sure how having a boyband member with a packed schedule playing for your Championship club works, but Chairman John Ryan is going to try it anyway.
Ryan, who has given Tomlinson the number 28 shirt for the very few (if any) games he will play at Keepmoat Stadium, released the following statement: “I am honoured to let Louis play in my number to help raise money for the charity.
“I wore this in 2003 for my record-beating appearance at Hereford and this is the first time I have allowed it to be used since but I felt this was a good cause.
“Louis and I organised last season’s charity game, in aid Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which was a big success with over 9000 fans attending,” said media manager Steve Uttley.
“It was natural to follow on from that and Louis wanted more involvement to raise the profile of his home town club and Bluebell Wood.
“What started out as light hearted banter on text has moved on to reality, which is a great coup for the club. Our next step is to get Louis on the pitch again in a Rovers kit.”
Louis, who will OF COURSE not be leaving One Direction to join the club, said: “I’ve been a massive Doncaster fan for a long time and growing up in Doncaster I’ve been to plenty of games at the Keepmoat. To be part of the club is incredible.”
Doncaster manager Paul Dickov joked that he needed to pull his weight for the club, saying: “He’d better get himself back over here. If he’s signed a contract he’s missed pre-season training already and he’s having a holiday in America so we’d better get him over pretty soon.
“It’s fantastic he’s a Doncaster supporter because first and foremost it raises the profile of the club. We can get him in September time to do a bit of training, get him involved in a reserve game and the proceeds of that will go to charity.”
We’re sure that dealing with football fans will be a lot easier for Louis, as fans of One Direction are, as I explored yesterday, absolutely terrifying.
