Severance & Harmony Cobel’s History Explained: Who Created the Program?

Severance Season 2 Episode 8 dropped several clues to the origin of the severance program, exposing the creator. So far, viewers have seen Reghabi performing reintegration on Mark. Reghabi’s knowledge about the severed brain made many viewers theorize that she could have been a big part of the beginning of Lumon’s severance journey. Further, it revealed Harmony Cobel’s background of joining Lumon, making her another possible candidate. So, who created the Severance program? Here’s what the recent episode has disclosed.

Was Harmony Cobel the creator of the Severance program before Season 2?

Severance Season 2 Episode 8, titled “Sweet Vitriol,” revealed that Harmony Cobel was the true creator behind various procedures of the severance program. It turns out that she is not just Lumon’s loyal “soldier” but also the brain behind the severance program’s nitty-gritties.

In Episode 8, Cobel travels to Salt’s Neck, her hometown, to retrieve something significant for her upcoming Lumon revenge plan. It turns out to be the notebook where Cobel has drawn out several severance procedures.

The process of severance and the severed floor is quite complex. There are multiple ways in which Innies and Outies can be interchanged, including overtime contingency, Glasgow block, and more. The recent episode revealed it was young Cobel who came up with most of the ideas.

Cobel being the brains behind severance procedures also ties in how Mark’s reintegration story will unfold in the following episodes. At the end of the episode, Devon finally gets hold of Cobel and tells her about Mark’s reintegration.

Cobel gets angry, yelling that Reghabi is trying to kill Mark. While viewers are still in the dark about how much Mark remembers, Cobel talks to him directly on the call, commanding him to tell her everything. As the true architect of the severance floor, it seems Cobel is the only one who can truly help Mark and hopefully save him from having Petey’s tragic fate.

The episode also indicates that Cobel will likely ditch Lumon’s loyalty and ultimately help Mark save Gemma. Fans have theorized that using the Glassgow block can help Outie Mark reach out to Gemma and bring her back.

Mark and Cobel both chose Severance to escape personal tragedy. Cobel created the program to forget her mother’s death, while Mark underwent the procedure to cope with losing Gemma. Their eventual alliance is expected to create a powerful full-circle moment, which can also spell serious trouble for Lumon.
