Wondering why Netflix canceled The Recruit? We have all the details. Colton Dunn, who plays Lester Kitchens in the series, confirmed the news on March 6, 2025. Created by Alexi Hawley, this spy adventure series has reached the end of the line after two seasons.
Here are all the details on why The Recruit was not renewed for a third season.
Why did Netflix cancel The Recruit after Season 2?
Netflix canceled The Recruit due to a decline in viewership in its second Season and high production costs.
Following its January 30, 2025, premiere, The Recruit Season 2 was off to a good start, garnering decent views in its first week. It even ranked second in Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10, generating almost 1.2 billion views. However, Netflix’s numbers tell a different story. According to Netflix’s data, The Recruit saw a sharp decline in viewership. While Season 1 had 7.3 million views in its debut week, Season 2 only generated 5.9 million. Thus, despite the series’ decent performance in the charts, the numbers weren’t enough to keep it afloat.
Additionally, The Recruit was one of those shows that earned a renewal despite being a smaller production. Hence, a high production cost might be another reason why Netflix decided to drop it. Furthermore, Season 2 had a more expensive production due to overseas filming in South Korea. Although there were high hopes for a third season, these factors dictate why The Recruit couldn’t make it further down the line.
Will a movie sequel happen instead of The Recruit Season 3?
There is currently no official confirmation regarding The Recruit Season 2 sequel movie.
Following the cancellation of The Recruit, showrunner Alexi Hawley rekindled hope among fans when he pitched a potential sequel movie. The second season of the show ended on a major cliffhanger. In light of the cancellation, Hawley took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the possibility of there being a The Recruit movie. However, this remains entirely speculative, as Netflix has yet to greenlight the potential film. Hawley, too, has not given any further positive updates regarding it.
