In the build-up to Outer Banks Season 5, J. Anthony Crane, who portrays Chandler Groff on the show, has come out to share his opinion on the possibilities of a spin-off prequel project. Having spawned four installments so far, the action-adventure drama series will finally draw curtains on a successful run with its upcoming fifth season. However, Outer Banks might still continue through spin-offs, with Crane expressing his belief in the potential of a prequel series.
J. Anthony Crane says writers would love to do an Outer Banks prequel spin-off
In a recent discussion, the renowned film and stage actor noted that formulating a project around the teen versions of the show’s adults has what it takes to carry the franchise forward after Outer Banks Season 5.
While speaking with The Direct, J. Anthony Crane stated, “They’d be fools not to, honestly. I don’t know if it adheres to the same format as treasure-hunting per se because… Definitely, the Maltese Falcon is like the thing that carries this show. The chase for the ‘thing,’ the Indiana Jones of it all, ‘The Goonies’ of it all. Who knows without that ‘thing.'”
Crane then added that “writers would love to” build upon such a concept, saying, “I do know people are invested in these characters and they could definitely see how these origin stories play out. They’d be fools not to.”
The setup for Outer Banks Season 5 has already laid the foundations of a potential prequel series, focusing on the OBX parents by dropping crucial tidbits about their past over the years. In addition to Crane’s Chandler Groff, the show has also alluded to the histories of JJ’s parents, Kiara’s family, Ward Cameron, Pope’s father, as well as John B.’s father.
“They’ve definitely built the pieces for that,” Crane exclaimed while talking about the chances of a prequel Outer Banks series. “I would love to see it. I know the writers would love to do it. One can only hope.” Meanwhile, Netflix has not shared any official word regarding such a spin-off project. Furthermore, the streaming platform has yet to confirm the official release date for Outer Banks Season 5.
