Tom Hanks’ latest documentary series, The Americas, has sparked controversy, with some viewers questioning whether there is AI usage in its production. The show, which depicts the wildlife of North and South America, features stunning cinematography showcasing the beauty of nature.
So, was Artificial Intelligence used in the production of the show? Let’s find out!
Did Tom Hanks’ The Americas documentary series use AI during production?
Despite claims of AI being used in Tom Hanks’ The Americas documentary series, there’s no concrete evidence to support these theories.
The Americas, a ten-episode docuseries that delves deep into the wildlife and ecosystems of North and South America, is narrated by Tom Hanks and produced by the creators of Planet Earth and Blue Planet.
Since its premiere on NBC and Peacock on February 23, the series has faced accusations from some viewers claiming that it has AI-generated imagery and even Tom Hanks’ narration was not real.
Despite these allegations, the production team has remained silent on the matter. However, the sheer scale and authenticity of the footage suggest that AI was unlikely to have been involved. Executive producer Mike Gunton, known for his work on Planet Earth, has spoken passionately about the challenges of creating such a project.
In a recent appearance on Cherry the Geek TV, Gunton described the filming process as “an expedition.” He explained, “It is effectively a filming expedition. And every single one has to be bespoke for that habitat, that animal, that location. So, unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all.”
Gunton also revealed that Tom Hanks was deeply invested in the project. According to him, Hanks wanted viewers to feel like they were on a journey with him, saying, “Come with me. Let me show you something” (via The Direct).
