With the much-awaited Season 2 of The Last of Us nearing its release date, the show’s creators have come out to share their opinions on the possibility of Season 3 and future installments in the franchise. The debut chapter of the series dropped in January 2023 and instantly garnered favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. With a follow-up edition now on the horizon, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have shed light on how The Last of Us Season 3 could pan out.
The Last of Us showrunners talk Season 3 and beyond
In a recent discussion, the show’s creators confirmed that their adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game could spawn more than three seasons.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly about the future of The Last of Us series, Craig Mazin stated, “I think it’s pretty likely that our story will extend past a season 3. How far past? I can’t say. And that’s not to say that there are not other stories that could be told, but this story is the one that Neil and I are telling.”
Neil Druckmann then echoed his creative partner’s sentiments, confirming that they have an overarching idea about how they want to approach The Last of Us beyond Seasons 2 and 3. “We have a plan,” Naughty Dog’s head of creative noted. “We know what we need to do going forward, but we couldn’t tell you right now exactly how many episodes or how many seasons it would take to get there.”
The Last of Us Season 2 is currently on track to hit the small screens sometime in April 2025. The edition will cover chunks of the sequel game, with Mazin and Druckmann seemingly having a multi-season plan for Part II. Despite their encouraging comments, HBO has yet to officially renew The Last of Us for Season 3.
Based on the video game series of the same name, the post-apocalyptic drama series revolves around the adventures of Joel, who joins forces with a young girl, Ellie, as the duo attempts to traverse their way through a fungal pandemic.
