A trio of winter storms are set to impact the United States over the coming week from Monday, January 27, to February 3. We predicted two in our forecast last week, which includes Winter Storm Freya that is expected to hit the northeastern US up until Wednesday and cause several inches of snow. The third is a bit more difficult to predict, but early weather models project that it will be coming soon. Here’s when another winter storm is expected to arrive over the next seven days.
When is the next winter storm coming this week?
The next immediate winter storm is coming Monday night and is predicted to linger over Michigan and parts of New England until Wednesday. After that, another large winter storm is expected to form around New Mexico and Texas before hitting the rest of the eastern United States, while a third could impact the northeastern US again around Sunday, February 2.
These predictions are based on weather reports by experts Ryan Hall on Sunday and Max Schuster on Monday. If these storms gain enough intensity, they might be unofficially named Winter Storm Freya, Garnett, and Harlow by The Weather Channel.
The second winter storm is looking to form late on Wednesday, bringing rain over Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. At the same time, a storm will bring some snow to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. These two systems are expected to join together and become a much larger storm that will blanket the eastern half of the US with a lot of precipitation. It’s unclear which states will get rain or snow, but early models say that the dividing line will be in the middle of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
In fact, there’s a rare flood risk centered on the borders between Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana due to this second storm. Flash flooding could occur over these states if the storm lingers for several days. Heavy rain has been predicted by the NWS Weather Prediction Center for these states, along with Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, over the next seven days.
Last but not least, a third storm from Canada is predicted to hit Michigan on Sunday and move eastward over New England on Monday. That said, this forecast is about a week away, so we’ll know much more about the location and intensity of this storm by the weekend.
