‘My Shayla’ Trend on TikTok Explained

A trend called ‘My Shayla’ has been making the rounds on TikTok. This has sparked intrigue and curiosity among users of the social media app, who have grown curious about the trend’s origins. Recently, TikTok has become the breeding ground for all sorts of trends like the Indigo and DTMF trends.

So what does ‘My Shayla’ mean? Here is the new TikTok trend explored.

Exploring ‘My Shayla’ trend on TikTok

The My Shayla trend on TikTok sees users upload a picture or video emphasizing their feelings of heartbreak, sadness, or annoyance at a particular person, accompanied by an audio of a person crying and saying, ‘My Shayla.’

Here is an example of a user expressing how they get mad at their pet dog but then remember their deep love for it.

The person in question is none other than Fast & Furious actor Tyrese Gibson. In November 2017, Gibson shared a series of now-deleted videos on Instagram. Here, he was seen crying for his daughter Shayla during his custody battle with her mother and ex-wife, Norma Mitchell. In distress and agony at the possibility of losing the chance to see his daughter again, Gibson broke down crying, saying, ‘Oh my god…My Shayla…my shayla.’

He also revealed in the videos that he was paying $13,000 monthly for child support. “What more do you want from me?” he said while crying.

At the time of its uploading, Gibson’s video garnered mixed reactions. Some sympathized with his difficult situation, while others chose to mock and degrade him. This video left a lasting impact on social media, resulting in the meme ‘Crying Tyrese,’ or ‘Cryrese.’

The original 2017 viral video and the ‘My Shayla’ soundbite recently met a resurgence in popularity. This was after several TikTok users like @bunionlover45 found and uploaded it online.

Gibson himself caught wind of the growing popularity. On New Year’s Day, he took to Instagram to address it. “All Over TikTok…Congratulations,” he said. “What more do you want from me? Some classic one-liners.”
