Silo Season 2 Episode 9, titled The Safeguard, is now available for streaming on Apple TV+. Fans of the show have likely come away with more questions than answers. One of these questions involves the eponymous Safeguard placed on the mysterious AI-esque entity Algorithm.
Here is everything you need to know about the Algorithm’s Safeguard in Silo Season 2.
What Is the Algorithm’s Safeguard in Silo Season 2 Episode 9?
Woard the end of Silo Season 2 Episode 9, Lukas Kyle uses Salvador Quinn’s copy of the Pact to decipher the other man’s letter. Lukas goes down to the bottom of the Silo and discovers a metallic structure or tunnel. The algorithm’s voice addresses him when he tries to find a way into the tunnel. It tells him to take a few steps back. The new IT shadow was introduced to the Algorithm in episode 7 of the second season after Bernard took him to the bunker room so that he could have access to all digital files. In episode 9, the Algorithm reveals to Lukas that he is the fourth person to find the tunnel after Salvador Quinn, Mary Meadows, and George Wilkins. The algorithm didn’t interact with Wilkins. However, it gave the same instructions to the other two that it now does to Lukas. It implies that if Lukas tells anyone about the tunnel and their conversation, it will trigger the “Safeguard.”
Lukas promises to follow the Algorithm’s directives, but precisely what this “Safeguard” is remains unclear. Lukas informs the Algorithm that he knows about the Safeguard. So, it’s possible that he found out about it after reading Quinn’s letter.
The Safeguard likely refers to a protocol that the Algorithm can initiate to neutralize all residents of the silo in case of extreme circumstances. In Hugh Howey’s original works (spoilers ahead), every Silo in that fictional world comes with protocols of self-destruction, and the Safeguard can be a reference to that. We will probably learn more about it in Season 2.
