Here’s How Much Snow Winter Storm Cora Will Drop by This Weekend

Forecasts for Winter Storm Cora have it hitting multiple states in the southeastern US with many inches of snow, sleet, and rain. The upcoming winter storm, named Cora by The Weather Channel, is expected to form early Thursday morning, January 9, over Texas as cold arctic air converges with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. It is will likely take more than two days for the storm’s path to reach the Atlantic Ocean, heading east and impacting states from New York to North Carolina. Here’s how much snow is projected to fall from Thursday to late Saturday from Winter Storm Cora.

What are the snow totals for Winter Storm Cora?

Conservatively, Winter Storm Cora is expected to drop eight inches of snowfall, with the higher totals around northern Alabama around Huntsville, northern Georgia above Atlanta, and southeastern Tennessee near Chattanooga.

This is according to weather expert Ryan Hall in a report on Wednesday that shows expected snow totals for the winter storm according to the National Weather Service. The areas in light blue indicate snowfall from 0 to 2 inches, those in solid blue indicate snowfall from 2 to 6 inches, and those in purple predict snow of over 6 inches.

As for overall snow totals for specific cities through to the weekend, Hall has the following predictions:

  • Dallas, Texas – 1.5 to 3 inches
  • Little Rock, Arkansas – 7 inches
  • Memphis, Tennessee – 6 inches
  • Nashville, Tennessee – 5 inches
  • Huntsville, Alabama – 7 inches
  • Chattanooga, Tennessee – 7.5 inches
  • Birmingham, Alabama – 1.5 inches
  • Atlanta, Georgia – 2 inches
  • Charlotte, North Carolina – 1.5 inches
  • Louisville, Kentucky – 4.0 inches
  • Richmond, Virginia – 3.5 inches
  • Washington, D.C. – 2 inches

The Weather Channel more or less agrees with these totals, forecasting 5 to 8 inches of snowfall from an area north of Dallas to Huntsville. That said, it projects that between 8 and 12 inches of snow could fall across central Arkansas and other regions in the mid-South.

The National Weather Service warns on X of hazardous driving condition during the winter storm, which will bring a mixture of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
