Here’s Why Donald Trump Wants To Buy Greenland

Donald Trump has once again expressed his intention to “buy” Greenland to make it a part of the United States of America. He previously spoke on the subject during his election campaign and revived the discussion recently. In a Truth Social post, Trump shared a video of a Greenlander putting on a “MAGA” hat and asking the president-elect to “buy” the autonomous Danish territory. Trump then called the island an “incredible place” and announced his son Don Jr.’s travel plans with other representatives “to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights.”

Why Trump wants to buy Greenland

On Tuesday, Donald Trump shared his intentions to “buy” Greenland in a Truth Social post after previously having brought up the idea during his election campaign. He posted a video of a Greenland man asking him to “buy us” while throwing on the red “MAGA” hat. The individual then elaborated, “Because we don’t want to be colonized by the Danish government anymore,” further explaining that they get “ripped every year” selling their minerals. “We are the richest nation in the world and we don’t get to use that much,” the Greenlander continued before professing his love for the U.S.

By sharing the clip, Trump wrote in the post that he has often heard “the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA.'” He then revealed his son, Don Jr., and other representatives’ plans to travel to “some of the most magnificent areas and sights” in Greenland, calling it “an incredible place.” Furthermore, the president-elect assured that the people there “will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part” of the U.S. He also guaranteed protection “from a very vicious outside World” and vowed to “cherish it.” Trump further stated, “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

During his latest press conference at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Donald Trump refused to rule out “military or economic coercion” in his attempts to gain control over Greenland. He said the same regarding his position to gain hold over the Panama Canal. Trump said, “We need them for economic security.” He later added, “We need Greenland for national security purposes.”

How has Denmark responded?

Al Jazeera reported that Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, responded negatively to Donald Trump’s wishes to “buy” Greenland. On Tuesday, Frederiksen announced that the Artic island is “not for sale” and “belongs to the Greenlanders.” Moreover, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who has called for independence from its colonial Danish ties, rejected Trump’s proposal to become a part of the U.S.

In fact, Don Jr., who visited Greenland “as a private individual,” confirmed in a podcast on Monday, “No, I am not buying Greenland.” He further noted that his trip to the autonomous Danish territory was “personal.”
