Voters want to know when election results will start coming in for the 2024 presidential election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Each state has different procedures for when votes are counted and when polling locations close, so the timing for when the election is called in each state will vary greatly. Swing states in particular have a high possibility of needing a recount if the race is extremely close. Here’s when we should expect poll results to come in after Election Day.
When are poll results expected to come in by state?
The election results will likely start coming in by 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET on Election Day, November 5, and continue to arrive over the following two weeks.
That said, based on the 2020 election between Biden and Trump, battleground states could take more than two weeks for their race to be called. Given how close the 2024 election is between Harris and Biden, it’s not too far out of place to expect that history may repeat itself.
As a point of comparison, here’s when the race for each state (all times Eastern) was called during the 2020 election by the Associated Press.

As noted by The New York Times, Georgia vote reporting is fast, but in the 2020 election, the race was so close that ballots needed to be tallied by hand over more than two weeks. Votes for North Carolina will be reported by midnight, but new voting rules mean that early voting results will no longer be reported at poll close time. As for Alaska, the state will likely go to Donald Trump, but it may take time to resolve absentee ballots in its ranked-choice voting system.
