Donald Trump took questions from reporters while riding in a garbage truck, following President Biden’s controversial comments regarding the Republican nominee’s supporters.
Trump said that he was riding the truck “in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden,” addressing comments made by the President following Trump’s Madison Square Garden Rally. During the rally, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a poorly received joke in which he referred to Puerto Rico as an “island of garbage.” Hinchliffe’s comments were widely condemned as racist, with Biden saying: “the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”

Less than 24 hours after Biden made his comment, Trump donned a high-visibility jacket and took a ride in a ‘Trump 2024’ branded garbage truck. Speaking to the press, Trump criticized Biden along with Kamala Harris. This is despite Harris distancing herself from Biden’s comments.
“I think that the comment made by really both of them, because there are really two of them, about being garbage, maybe 250 million people… they shouldn’t be talking,” he said.

Biden’s comments have been interpreted in two ways. Some have said that the President was criticizing Hinchcliffe and those who echoed his thoughts, while others believe that he was referring to all Trump supporters as garbage.
Biden later said that he wasn’t tarring all Trump supporters with the same brush. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
