The Delphi murder trial against Richard Allen has finally begun. Seven years after the bodies of Abby Williams and Libby German were found, opening statements have been made which revealed some shocking new details about the case.
Delphi murder trial prosecutor releases the victim’s cause of death
Due to the young age of the victims and the heinous nature of the crime, many of the circumstances around the murders have been kept confidential. However, we now know how the girls were killed and the condition of the bodies when they were discovered.
According to ABC News, during the opening statements, prosecutor Nick McLeland addressed the jury, “You’re going to see the crime scene. It was a gruesome scene. Libby was completely naked. Her throat was cut, blood all over. Abby’s throat was also cut.”
While Allen confessed to killing the girls to his wife and mother while in jail, no direct physical evidence linking him to the crime scene have been found. He was on the same hiking trail as the girls on the day they were murdered, but cellphone data shows he was gone from the area before the crime occurred. However, an unspent .40 round found near one of the bodies was shown to have cycled through the Sig P226 that Allen owns.
The defense claims that Allen’s mental health had deteriorated in jail, which caused him to falsely confess to the murders. It also stated the belief that the girls had been killed elsewhere and dumped later, citing the fact that searchers didn’t find the bodies or clothing until the next day despite a thorough search of the area.
The Delphi murders have captivated the internet due to the secrecy surrounding the case. The lack of details has led to theories involving multiple perpetrators, cult sacrifices, human trafficking, and more. However, for now, the prosecution seems to be centering the case around Allen alone.
