Katy Perry addressed her recent collaboration with Dr. Luke for a new album on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast episode on Wednesday. Perry spoke about her controversial decision to work with Dr. Luke, real name Łukasz Gottwald, in light of Kesha’s sexual assault allegations against him. The singer accused the music producer of drugging and sexually abusing her.
Reportedly, Katy Perry defended Dr. Luke, talking about their long-term partnership and her past experiences with him. She revealed how “he was one of the people” who helped facilitate her “metamorphosis.”
Katy Perry responds to Dr. Luke collab criticism
On Wednesday’s episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Katy Perry responded to the criticism she presently faces for collaborating with Dr. Luke. Perry answered podcast host Alex Cooper’s questions concerning her work with the music producer accused of sexual assault on her upcoming album, “143.” She claimed to understand the “conversations” about him being “one of many collaborators that I collaborated with. But the reality is, it comes from me.”
Perry explained, “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that; one of the writers, one of the producers. And I am speaking from my own experience.” The 39-year-old had previously, in June, attempted to evade questions regarding the controversy while in Paris.
Katy Perry’s collaboration with Dr. Luke sparked outrage because her album’s lead single, “Woman’s World,” revolves around women’s empowerment. Citing this, she further clarified, “When I speak about ‘Woman’s World,’ I speak about feeling so empowered now, as a mother, as a woman, giving birth, creating life, creating another set of organs. A brain! A heart! I created a whole ass heart! And I did it, and I’m still doing it.”
The “Dark Horse” singer continued that she is “still a matriarch and feeling really grounded in that, that’s where I’m speaking from.” She then mentioned creating “all of this with several different collaborators, people that I’ve collaborated with from the past, from ‘Teenage Dream’ era. All of that.”
Sources state that in 2014, Kesha had sued Dr. Luke for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2005. The accusations alleged emotional and psychological abuse, prompting the music producer to counter-sue her for defamation. The two reached a settlement last year.
Katy Perry has seemingly attempted to settle the discussion surrounding the Dr. Luke controversy as her album’s release date, September 20, approaches.
