You don’t have to be a genius to know that song lyrics are rarely what they seem. But it’s still nice when, after years of speculation, a musical artist confirms what we already suspected. Such was the case with Harry Styles, who, during a concert, divulged what he intended with the song title “Watermelon Sugar.”
The 27-year-old British singer/songwriter was performing in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday as part of his Love on Tour concert series, when he decided to unpack the meaning behind the popular tune for his fans.
“This song is about…” the One Direction star started to say, then backpedaled. “It doesn’t really matter what it’s about.”
Ah, but he couldn’t stop himself from sharing. “It’s about, uh, the sweetness of life,” he added.
A few lines into the song, Styles paused, then revealed, “It’s also about the female orgasm, but that’s totally different.”
We can’t say we were shocked to find out the inspiration behind the metaphor. (You know how dirty our minds are, right?) But we are surprised Styles was so shy about it.
After his omission (not the nocturnal kind), he added, “It’s not really relevant.”
Um…we think the female orgasm is totally relevant, in song or between the sheets. We also assume it matters to Styles’ main squeeze, Olivia Wilde, who is likely blushing at this exact moment.
