Things look bad for the people of New York on FX’s The Strain, which has adapted the dark vampire novel series by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. But no matter how grim things look this season, the series will be back next year for a definitive conclusion.
Via Deadline, FX has renewed The Strain for a fourth season that will bring the show to a proper conclusion. There were only three original novels to draw upon, and both del Toro and Hogan had previously stated that the series would have a limited run on FX that wouldn’t exceed 65 episodes. Assuming that next season will also get the ten new episodes that season 3 received, then the series will wrap after 46 episodes.
“We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain,” said FX’s Nick Grad in a statement. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”

Some outlets have characterized this as a cancellation because the series was never quite the breakout hit that FX may have expected. However, executive producer Carlton Cuse told Deadline that the original plan was always in play. In fact, the series almost ended after this season!
“Our original plan was for the series to last three years,” said Cuse. “Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”
The final season of The Strain will return to FX in summer 2017.
