On Star Wars Rebels, the crew of the Ghost have survived Force wielding Inquisitors, Grand Moff Tarkin, Maul, and even Darth Vader himself. But now it’s time for the rebels to face someone who may pose an even bigger threat to their survival and their cause: Grand Admiral Thrawn.
It’s the readers of the Star Wars Extended Universe novels who have the best understanding of Thrawn. In the simplest of terms, Thrawn is a tactical genius unlike any other in the Empire. He’s not showy or prone to making the same mistakes that have allowed the rebels to stay one step ahead. Soon enough, Thrawn will be several steps ahead of the rebels simply because they aren’t ready for someone who plays the long game on his scale. According to Thrawn, he’ll make the rebels “the architects of their own destruction.” And when he makes a promise, you’d better believe that he can deliver.

Let’s put it this way. Thrawn is so bad-ass that not even a retcon could keep him out of the new continuity. He’s mastered art, and the art of war because he has an innate ability to understand alien cultures through their creativity has allowed him to fully know those he would destroy. It’s unlikely that the series would sign an actor of the caliber of Lars Mikkelsen to play Thrawn and just to get rid of him in the season finale. Although the show did do that with Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Seventh Sister, we think that Thrawn will be around for a time to come.
