This fall, Marvel’s Luke Cage is getting his own series on Netflix, and that means big problems for the original hero for hire!
As originally envisioned by Marvel back in the ’70s, Luke Cage was a blaxploitation character and so were the characters around him. For the new Luke Cage show, Cheo Hodari Coker has adapted the modern take on Cage and updated his original comic book villains to give the series a more serious tone and even a few shades of realism…or as real as a story can get when the protagonist is a bulletproof man who has super strength.
At Comic-Con 2016, CraveOnline caught up with Coker and Marvel’s Head TV, Jeph Loeb to get their insights about the Luke Cage series. Along the way, they told us which comic books influenced the storytelling for the show, including a few comics that had nothing to do with Cage! Coker also shared his desire to do Heroes for Hire, before settling down on the theme of “What is a hero?” for the first season.

Mike Colter will reprise his role as Luke Cage in the new series after debuting in the role last season on Jessica Jones. Joining Colter on the show are Mahershala Ali as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick as Misty Knight,
Theo Rossi as “Shades” Alvarez, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple; a role she played on both Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
All 13 episodes of Luke Cage will drop on Netflix on September 30. Be ready!
