According to reports, the WWE Championship match at SummerSlam was supposed to begin its build on the July 20th episode of Monday Night Raw, but taping delays prevented that.

As was reported earlier in the month, the WWE Championship match at SummerSlam 2020 is expected to be Drew McIntyre defending against Randy Orton. Randy Orton has begun rediscovering himself as the Legend Killer, while Drew McIntyre continues to prove his worth as WWE Champion.

Prior to the 7/20 episode of Monday Night Raw, there were delays and rewrites, and according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (via WrestleTalk), one of the segments scrapped from the show featured the beginning of the build to the match between Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton at SummerSlam.

“The big item on tonight’s show was originally to be an angle involving Orton and Drew McIntyre to set up their planned WWE Championship match as the main event for SummerSlam. As of this morning, that was still on the show. but numerous other items have been changed.”

Randy Orton dispatched of The Big Show on July 20 and Drew McIntyre made an agreement to face Dolph Ziggler once again for the WWE Championship. That match will take place on July 27.

WrestleZone will continue to monitor the story and report any and all updates.
