Gattis is a 26-year-old rookie — who is currently on the DL — but has been tearing the cover off the ball, even hitting cleanup at one point this season.
After spending a year and a half at a junior college in Oklahoma, Gattis figured he had enough with baseball and spent three years on a “personal journey” in which he was a ski lift operator, janitor and pizza flipper. He lived in hostels and sojourned through Colorado, California, New Mexico and Texas before deciding to return to baseball.
