Adam Sandler has been cracking us up for as long as we can remember. From his days strumming the guitar as he mused about his “red hooded sweatshirt” or Hanukkah on Saturday Night Live to his string of side-splittingly funny movies like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, and The Wedding Singer, we’ve been laughing at his antics since the early ’90s. That’s why it was no surprise when he gave the commencement speech at NYU and left the audience rolling in laughter.
Since he’s been in our lives forever, it’s hard to forget that Sandler is 55-years-old. He graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU 34 years ago. Because attending the college had such a dramatic impact on his life and career, he recently returned to his alma mater to give this year’s graduation speech.

In the speech, he joked about how art is extremely important in today’s chaotic times because “we just want to give our fellow humans an escape from this increasingly psychotic world we live in.” He also pointed out that the reason many of the students entered the world of art is that they literally can’t do anything else.
But the real laughter came from Adam Sandler explaining how the parents really messed up. This is because, since their kids are getting a degree in performing arts, they’ll be supporting them for a long time to come. “They are not leaving the nest anytime soon,” Sandler joked. “This is a tough business they chose, but there’s still time to talk them out of it.”
If you haven’t already, the video is definitely worth a watch (Sandler put it on his own Instagram account). This is especially true if you have kids graduating from college, you’re a graduate this year, or you simply have fond memories of the Sandman from all of his movies and comedy albums.
